On Writing and Life

“We live in stories. What we are is stories. We do things because of what is called character, and our character is formed by the stories we learn to live in.”

- William Kitteredge
in Taking Care: Thoughts on Storytelling and Belief

My aim in keeping this journal is to understand the stories I have come to inhabit. Through writing I’m taking an active role in shaping the stories I live in. Writing is significant to me for its reflexivity; it allows us to turn around on our lives & examine how the pieces have fallen into (or perhaps out of) place. Writing is an ordering of the mind. Writing provides meaning.

I began my first blog six months, right after graduating from Wabash. The Graduate was an attempt to provide undergrads with an honest look into the complexities of life right outta college. I enjoyed the process of reflecting, recording, sharing, & discussing the narrative arc of my life. This journal is inspired by that experience, an extension of those efforts, & it represents the development of a personal venue for sharing updates on my life. Perhaps in writing I’ll learn something, perhaps in reading you will too.
